Adult tube site & CMS glossary

Clear, jargon-free definitions of the terms you will meet when launching and running an adult tube site — from the software and SEO words to the monetization and compliance ones.

Adult tube site
A video site laid out like a "tube" — a grid of thumbnails with categories, tags and search — for adult content.
Adult tube CMS
The software that runs an adult tube site: video import, ranking, the player, the member zone, ads and SEO, all in one application.
Tube script
Another name for an adult tube CMS — the script or software package that powers a tube site.
Self-hosted
Software you install and run on your own server and fully control, as opposed to a hosted SaaS you rent.
Source-available
Code you can read and modify, even when it is not released under a formal open-source license.
Encoded code / ionCube
Source that has been scrambled so it cannot be read or edited; KVS and several paid scripts ship ionCube-encoded by default.
KVS (Kernel Video Sharing)
The established, paid, ionCube-encoded adult tube script and the market reference point.
CTR ranking
Ordering videos by click-through rate so the thumbnails people actually click rise to the top automatically.
Bulk / mass import
Adding many videos at once from a CSV or JSON file instead of entering them one by one.
Grabber
A scraper that pulls videos from other sites — legally risky compared with publishing a licensed catalogue.
Licensed catalogue
A library of content you are licensed to publish, as opposed to scraped or grabbed material.
Transcoding
Converting uploaded videos into multiple web-ready qualities (for example 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p).
FFmpeg
The open tool most tube sites use under the hood to transcode and process video.
CDN
A content delivery network that caches your videos close to viewers to cut latency and offload bandwidth.
Bandwidth
The volume of data served to viewers; for video sites it is usually the largest cost at scale.
Storage backend (S3 / FTP / SFTP / WebDAV)
Where a CMS keeps and serves media files; a good CMS supports several so you can pick the cheapest that performs.
Member zone
Logged-in user features such as accounts, favorites, watch history, likes and comments.
Taxonomy (category / tag / performer)
The entities a tube site uses to organize and cross-link videos so visitors can browse.
VAST
Video Ad Serving Template, the industry standard for serving in-player video ads such as pre-rolls.
Pre-roll
A short video ad shown before the content plays, usually delivered via VAST.
Pop-under
An ad window that opens behind the current page — a common adult-traffic monetization format.
AVOD
Advertising-based video on demand: free-to-watch content funded by ads, which is the classic tube model.
Age verification
Confirming a visitor is of legal age before showing adult content, increasingly required by law in the US and UK.
2257
US record-keeping law (18 U.S.C. 2257) requiring proof of performer age and identity for adult content.
DMCA
The US copyright takedown framework; a compliant site publishes a process and registers a designated agent.
Watermark
A logo or text overlaid on videos to brand them and deter theft.
Sitemap
An XML file listing your URLs so search engines can discover and crawl every page.
Canonical URL
The single preferred URL for a page, which tells search engines which version to index and rank.
hreflang
A tag that tells search engines which language or region version of a page to show each user.
JSON-LD / Schema.org
A structured-data format (and vocabulary) that describes your pages to search and AI engines, e.g. VideoObject.
Crawl budget
How many of your pages a search engine will crawl in a given period — a finite resource on large sites.
Duplicate content
Identical or near-identical pages that split ranking signals; fixed with canonicals and unique text.
301 redirect
A permanent redirect that sends an old URL to a new one and passes its ranking equity across.
